PUBLIC HEARINGS

2. Making Waves Academy Charter School Project – Phase 1, AP-18-1339 (DR).

This is a public hearing on a request for design review approval to construct Phase 1 of the Making Waves Academy Charter School Project on a 20-acre site located at 420 East 3rd Street in the RMD-O (Downtown High-Density Residential) and CP (Pedestrian Commercial) districts. APN: 073-550-001. This phase includes three contiguous school grounds which would serve up to 2,000 students in grades K-12.

If any further proof is needed that the City of Pittsburg leaders have lost their minds (even without the corruption of Joe Sbranti)  and are only in it for themselves, this “Charter School” project is a perfect example. There is nothing good about this project. The site is contaminated land, near a particulate-spewing “Coal” plant, adjacent to the toxic landfill for the Steel Mill, and is situated on Harbor Street, the major cross-town thoroughfare that is jammed with traffic twice a day with Pittsburg High School traffic. To cap it all off, this project is planned for some of the last, usable, waterfront property that is better suited for a project that would benefit the people of Pittsburg, not the people of faraway towns, as this “Charter School” is designed to do. (Not to mention probably paying for a certain Council Member’s Jaguar lease.)

Yet another monument to bad planning, poor city governance, and corruption, this “Charter School” project should be immediately halted for further review to determine a better town/location for it.

Pittsburg does not need the added problems this project will cause, including traffic, support costs and, ultimately, the City spending millions of dollars on infrastructure improvements on the taxpayer’s dime.

IF YOU WANT THE CITY TO PUT MORE EFFORT INTO THIS PROJECT, INCLUDING MOVING IT TO ANOTHER LOCATION THAT WOULD NOT COMPLETELY STOP TRAFFIC ON HARBOR AND RAILROAD EVERY MORNING, SPEAK UP AT THIS MEETING.  DEMAND THAT YOUR CITY LEADERS DO THE RIGHT THING FOR A CHANGE.
